Salinger s Influence On His Contributions - 2154 Words
Salinger had a fairly typical childhood growing up in the 1920s. He was born on January 1, 1919 to Sol Salinger and Marie Jillisch (McGrath). Born in New York City, he spent most of his childhood there (Telgen 117). When he was growing up, academic excellence was not one of Salingerââ¬â¢s priorities (117). After failing several prep schools, he finally graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania (117). Yet, with an IQ of 115, he never did finish his post-secondary education (Hipple 106; Miller 551). In 1937, Salinger traveled to Austria and Poland to learn his fatherââ¬â¢s business, but he was dissatisfied with it and returned to America (McGrath). Although unremarkable, his childhood did impact his literary contributions.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦D. Salinger also contributed other short compositions. He officially began his writing career when he took a short story course at Columbia University, where he had an opportunity in publish in Story magazine (Te lgen 117). After that, his literary career became increasingly more popular, appearing in numerous magazines (117). However, several of Salingerââ¬â¢s stories from the 1940s have never been republished because he refused such republications (117). He published Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters, and Seymour: An Introduction, and ââ¬Å"Hapworth 16, 1924â⬠in 1953, 1961, 1963, and 1965 respectively (McGrath; Miller 552). Salinger is recognized for his vivid depiction of young Americans during the post-WWII era as they are searching for their future (Mulligan 351). Despite his limited collection, Salinger is arguably one of the most popular American authors of the 20th century. Published in 1951, The Catcher in the Rye faced major criticisms for its controversial depiction of teenage angst. After WWII ended, the US emerged as the most powerful nation in the world, with 30 million children born in a period of 18 years following the war (Kallen 24-25). By the 1950s and 1960s, many of these children were going through their teenage years (24-25). The Catcher in the Rye reflected their unexplainable sensations and changes of adolescence (24-25). The Catcher in the Rye was considered a controversial book in the

Goal Line Technology in Soccer Free Essays
A global audience of 3. 2 billion people ââ¬â about 46. 4% of the world population ââ¬â watched the World Cup tournament of 2010, according to FIFA, the world governing body of soccer. We will write a custom essay sample on Goal Line Technology in Soccer or any similar topic only for you Order Now The final between Spain and The Netherlands alone had an audience of approximately 530 million. There is little debate about which sport is more played and watched more than any other. It unites and divides cities and countries. It sparks debate and controversy, which is discussed within families, with co-workers, and even between heads of state. At present, the most pressing issue facing the sport is whether to introduce goal line technology, computerized technology to definitely determine the scoring of a goal. This is not a new problem. According to the rules of the game, a goal should be awarded when the whole ball crosses the goal line. However, there have been many high profile cases when the officials have made the wrong decision and awarded a goal ââ¬â or failed to award a goal. In such a low scoring game as soccer, where teams typically score one to two goals per game, it can mean the difference between winning and losing a game. During an important tournament, it can mean winning or losing the biggest prize of them all: the World Cup. For example, in the 1966 World Cup final between a very closely matched England and West Germany sides, the game went into thirty minutes of extra time with the scores level after the normal ninety minute period. Then Alan Ball crossed the ball to Englandââ¬â¢s main striker, Geoff Hurst, who controlled and ball and shot towards the goal. The ball beat the German goalkeeper and crashed on the underside of the bar, sending it crashing down towards the goal line. Tofik Bakhramov, the watching Russian linesman (actually a common misconception, as he was actually from the then Soviet state of Azerbaijan) indicated to the referee it was a goal, believing that the whole ball had crossed the white line. The goal was given and it changed the match. England went on to win the game and seal the countryââ¬â¢s greatest ever sporting triumph. However, based on the TV footage and photographs of the incident, the common unbiased conception is that it bounced on the line and therefore the goal should not have been awarded. For years now the technology to judge whether the whole ball has crossed the goal line has existed. There are two well known systems: Sonyââ¬â¢s Hawk-Eye and the German alternative, GoalRef. Hawk-Eye is well known to cricket and tennis fans and has been used to great success in both sports, accurately showing where the ball landed in tennis, and predicting the flight of the ball in cricket. In soccer it could judge whether the ball crossed the goal line with a high level of accuracy. The second option ââ¬â Goalref ââ¬â places sensors inside the ball and goalposts, which categorically determine the exact location of the ball when near the goal. So why hasnââ¬â¢t the worldââ¬â¢s most populous sport embraced technology? Surely this technology would improve the game and make it fair for everyone? Well, it isnââ¬â¢t as simple as it appears. In fact FIFA have found itself in a quagmire. If they introduce technology now at this late stage in 2012 they will be seen as being slow to react to important problems; resist technology and they will only exacerbate the problem in the future. The gameââ¬â¢s hierarchy has, until recently, been largely against the introduction of technology. FIFA spends hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide investing in the game at grass roots level, determined to ensure football keeps its universal appeal by being played by all people on a level playing field. In short, FIFA wants a group of children playing on the beach in Brazil to essentially be playing the same game as Barcelona versus Real Madrid in the Champions League Final. Moreover, the governing body fears the introduction of technology will lead to a ââ¬Ëslippery slopeââ¬â¢ whereby technology will be used in many aspects of the game, drastically changing the flow of the game. Michel Platini, head of the very influential European governing body UEFA, is one such example of the resistance of technology. Platini says, ââ¬Å"we will see. As for technology, I donââ¬â¢t think itââ¬â¢s good for football. Maybe goal line technology, but that would be the first step towards the introduction of technology in all areas of the game. Iââ¬â¢m still very much against it and, to be honest, Iââ¬â¢m not going to change my mind at the age of 57. â⬠Instead, Platini has implemented a new system whereby five referees are used instead of the standard three officials. This, he argues, has eradicated the problem of ââ¬Ëghost goalsââ¬â¢ citing Marko Devicââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëgoalââ¬â¢ for Ukraine in the 2012 European Championships as being ââ¬Ëthe only errorââ¬â¢ in the last three years. Like most soccer fans, I love debating the game with family, friends and co-workers. I thrive on the controversy. When England midfielder Frank Lampard ââ¬Ëscoredââ¬â¢ for England against Germany in the 2010 World Cup (the ball was clearly over the line but the spin of it made it bounce back out of the goal and the game played on) I was on my feet shouting at the referee for not giving the clear goal. Equally, when the aforementioned Ukrainian striker Marko Devicââ¬â¢s shot clearly went over the goal line and neither the referee nor linemen saw it, I was smiling to myself thanking our good fortunate. In both cases it would have probably changed the match ââ¬â and the tournament. After the match endless experts and pundits argued the issue. Essentially the controversy had inadvertently created an even greater spectacle. As much as I love the debates, I think it is now time to move forward. There is too much money involved and the reputation and credibility of the game is at stake. I believe FIFA have an obligation and responsibility to introduce goal line technology ââ¬â and the sooner the better. It should proceed with caution though. The ball crossing the line is definitive. In essence, the whole ball either completely crossed the white line or it didnââ¬â¢t. It isnââ¬â¢t open to interpretation like, say, whether a player has committed a foul. It is my belief that FIFA, while embracing this technology, should oppose further technological advances in the game, especially when it comes to subjective decisions. Football is a fast-paced game and breaks in the continuity would drastically change the game for the worse. Goal line technology has been proven to work quickly and effectively ensuring it will have minimal negative effect. In conclusion, I acknowledge the problem of whether to introduce goal line technology is a divisive issue. I can see the argument from both sides. However, I do not agree with the current policy of stalling on the issue and delaying technological change or the over-complicated idea of bringing in more assistant referees, as suggested by Michel Platini. Instead, it is my belief that it is time for FIFA to embrace change and bring goal line technology into the ââ¬Å"beautiful game. â⬠How to cite Goal Line Technology in Soccer, Essay examples

Southwestern University Football Program
Question: Discuss about theSouthwestern University Football Program. Answer: Analysis of the Data using Quality Tools. The football program of Southwestern University has been achieving fame considerably for the past five years since Phil Stephenville has become the new coach. The continuous victory of SWU still did not make Joel Wisner, the president happy enough as he was facing a lot of complaints from the students, alumni as well as faculty members regarding the arrangements surrounding the stadium such as long queues in the concession stands, low quality of the seats, less parking attendants, small parking area and a few more. The problem was also there regarding the price of the tickets. The president then requested the vice president to identify the actual difficulties using quality tools (Tutka 2016) and solve it. The faculty members, students and alumni instead of being happy with the performance of the football team of the university were irritated by the problems faced by the audience. Major problem was with parking area, parking attendants, seats and facing long queues in the concession s tands for prices of tickets and food. These issues came up when a survey was done upon the reviews of the fans randomly for the past years under the instructions of the VP (Junghagen, Besjakov and Lund 2016). The trivial issues includes low quality food, poor services, dirty toilets, demand for a new stadium, less number of policepersons in the traffic area which was creating a mess and there was also demands for skyboxes in the stadium for better views (Wakefield 2015). All of the issues arose due the negligence of the management towards the betterment of the stadium and its services. Analysis of Problem and the Corresponding Effects (Created by Author) Utility of the Survey The vice president of the university did a random survey of the total quality management (TQM) (Umbel, 2017) based upon the reviews of the fans of the past years. This survey helped in the identification of the major issues. The survey could have been more useful if the issues were sorted out earlier. The quality tools used in surveying also figured out the key issues (Tutka 2016). The survey helped in choosing the solutions to resolve the issues such as use of slip-resistant materials in the edges, keeping extra provision for exit, improvement of the quality of the seats, allotting space for skyboxes, opening extra counters for concession in food and ticket prices, allotting more number of parking attendants to avoid chaos and making the parking area large enough for smooth processing. Final Step Keeping in mind all the major and trivial issues certain changes should be implemented by the management team. The stadium being larger multiple small screens or giant screen should be introduced for the audiences to watch live HD streams of the match (Umbel, 2017). The parking area should be broadened and seats must be improved very soon to meet the demands of the fans. Mobile service point should be allotted to provide better service in food and drinks. Silencing the Editor Within
SILENCING THE EDITOR WITHIN One of the most difficult parts of writing ââ¬â even if you write all day, every day ââ¬â is learning to ignore your internal editor when youââ¬â¢re working on a first draft. Even now, as I start writing, I can hear the nagging voice of doubt that makes it difficult to put words on paper. My particular voice of doubt looks a bit like my ninth-grade English teacher: Sheââ¬â¢s got a sour expression on her face, and sheââ¬â¢s wearing necklace made of little wooden apples. She knows everything. She hates experimentation. She stands behind me, reading over my shoulder and shaking her head. She makes little noises of disapproval as I work; the tap of my fingers on the keys punctuated every so often with notes of discouragement: ââ¬Å"Oh, you can do better than that, canââ¬â¢t you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well. Thatââ¬â¢s not very interesting, is it?â⬠ââ¬Å"I just donââ¬â¢t get it.â⬠Writing, well, isnââ¬â¢t always easy. Fighting the urge to engage in too much self-editing is even harder. Thereââ¬â¢s nothing wrong with having high standards. But, if you fret too much about getting it right the first time, youââ¬â¢ll wind up with a migraine and a blank page. Maybe your first draft is dreadful. So what? Throw it away, hit the ââ¬Å"deleteâ⬠key, bury it in the backyard in a shallow grave ââ¬â whatever makes you feel better. And keep going. Experiment a little. Donââ¬â¢t be afraid to make mistakes. Youââ¬â¢ll have plenty of time to revise and let your internal editor go crazy after youââ¬â¢ve gotten your ideas written down. But, when youââ¬â¢re trying to write a first draft, you have to ignore her and concentrate on what youââ¬â¢re trying to say and how youââ¬â¢re trying to say it. You canââ¬â¢t grow as a writer until you learn to stop worrying about perfection.

Discussion Board. Discussion BoardComputer Forensics and investigation Computer forensic is the investigation of the computers to carry out different required tasks. It is a wider concept related to the crimes happening in computer which is against the law. This technology enables the experts to have better access to accumulated information, to be more accurate in the identification of victims and it minimizes the wrongful accusations (Judd R. 2004).à The main purpose of using computer forensics in crime investigation is to ensure that the recovered information or data is valid and to ensure that no data is altered so that the original data can be used in the courts of law as evidences. It allows the forensic practitioners in the identification and analyzing of traces in a more objective manner. This method also efficiently searches a very large volume of data, assists in the interpretation of the results and contributes to generation of new knowledge and skills (Franke K.2007). The different forensic tools include PC Inspector File Recovery which is used to reveal information from computer storage media, Encaseà ® used in disk imaging and analysis of data, the Forensic Tool Kit developed by AccessData which enables the Computer Forensic Specialists to view all the files that are stored in the computer system and FTK Imager which is used in imaging and viewing the storage devices. The computer forensic personnel consist of the professionals who have the relevant certifications based on forensic curricula and competency examinations and who are able to use the modern investigative techniques. These computer forensic specialists investigate crimes which are committed using computers such as wire fraud, identity theft, child pornography homicide and others. They provide assistance to the law enforcement officers in the preparations of search warrants which lead to the seizing of computers. They also assist in collecting and processing evidence at the scenes of crime (Gallegos F. 2005). Conclusion Computer forensics becoming an important field and it requires one to possess well developed technical skills and legal knowledge. Very powerful software tools are used in this field.

You can also manage public access to private networked resources such as host applications. It can be used to record all attempts to enter the private network and trigger alarms when hostile or unauthorized entry attempt. Firewalls can filter packets based on their source and destination addresses and port numbers. This is known as address filtering. Firewalls can also filter specific types of network traffic. This is also known as protocol filtering because the decision to forward or reject traffic depends on the protocol us ed, such as HTTP, FTP or Telnet. Firewalls can also filter traffic by packet attribute or state. A firewall cannot prevent individual users with modems to dial in or outside the network without going through the firewall at all. Employee misconduct or negligence cannot be controlled by firewalls. Policies regarding use and misuse of passwords and user accounts must be strictly enforced. These are management issues that must be asked in the planning of any security policy, but cannot be solved with firewalls alone. [5]

Equity and trust Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Equity and trust - Essay Example A discretionary trust is a kind of trust, and it can prevail only if a trustee has the core Trust obligation1. For instance , if a settlor creates a trust for the benefit of John Smith with a trust fund of say ? 10,00,000 by appointing Abraham Lincoln as its trustee and to pay any unspent money in that trust to John Smith after 20 years . He also stipulates that within the 20 year, Abraham Lincoln can spend all or any of the trust fund and its income to all or any of the Settlorââ¬â¢s kids or grand kids. The above fall under discretionary trust as John Smith has the authority to decide how to distribute the trust funds for the advantage of the Settlorââ¬â¢s kids or to Abraham Lincoln himself. A fixed trust is one where the trustee may not have any power to select how to divide the trust funds other than the specified beneficiaries2. ... of beneficiaries for whom the trust is meant for and is also known as ââ¬Å" given postulant ââ¬Å" check.4 In IRC v Broadway Cottage Trust5, it was held that so as to fulfil the test of certainty of objects, a whole record of the donees should be recognised failing which the trust would be declared as void or the test is continued to be applicable, particularly for a fixed trust6. In McPhail v Doulton7 , Bertram Baden, as a settlor vested some assets to trustees to divide the income in their complete authority, to employees both present and past of Mathew Hall & Co Ltd or their dependants or relatives. The main issue was whether trust fulfilled the litmus test for certainty of objects and whether it is just a power or a trust8. McPhail case is relating to a discretionary trust where trustees have a crucial obligation to use their discretion to offer benefits to beneficiaries which has been assigned by the settlor to the trustees, and it is not ââ¬Å"just powerâ⬠given to the trustees by a settlor. Further, the main objective of the discretionary trust is to safeguard both the income and the capital of the fund and as a result, the beneficiaries derive benefits from the outcome of the Settlorââ¬â¢s profligacy. Moreover, discretionary trust is being mainly planned as a tax-avoidance method by making the rights of the beneficiaries under the discretionary trust as vague as those rights are designed more arduous to tax9. In Re Gestetner Settlement10 case, a trust was established for the members of a ââ¬Å"specific class ââ¬Å"as the trustees may choose the beneficiaries as they deem fit from that specified class. IRS argued that the trust was void due to uncertainty, and it was held that under discretionary trust, the trustees have such authority to decide or identify the

Health Care Organization Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Health Care Organization - Term Paper Example Human resources play a key role at all levels of health care provision, enhanced by proper decision making by health care organizations. In the light of the Johns Hopkins Medicine organization, human resources environment is evaluated and assessed in terms of the various factors that characterize that environment. Challenges of managing the human resources in the organization Managing human resources is often characterized by a number of identifiable challenges. These challenges are spread across all variables that define the operational functionality of human resources in an organization. Human resources management in the context of Johns Hopkins Medicine organization experiences challenges internally and externally, based on local and international trends in factors that affect human resources and the entire health care industry. The challenges herein are discussed below: New technology challenge The Johns Hopkins Medicine organization is one of the health care organizations that h ighly adopt changes in new and advanced technologies. The organization is committed to providing the domestic and international community with health services that utilize contemporary technologies in a bid to make the services effective and efficient. This is actually a positive effort for the organization, but its human resource management personnel face a significant challenge posed by this pursuit. This process promotes a shift from touch labor to knowledge work (Beardwell & Claydon, 2010). In other words, managing this change in the context of the workforce is a difficult task. Leadership development Leadership impacts on the organization at all levels. This is because organizational decisions are taken at all levels due to the required interdepartmental relationship. While Johns Hopkins Medicine organization is focused on becoming a world leading example in the health sector, little or no concentration is directed towards internal leadership of specific departments. On the sam e note, all the departments are required to work in harmony and observe the same goals and objectives. The conflicting pursuit challenges leadership development in the organization. Measurement of effectiveness Many health care organizations are focused on the result other than the process. Effectiveness measurement in these organizations is directed to the general company performance other than the individual contribution of each department in the organization. It is important to account for the effectiveness of the human resource department in the pursuit of the organizational goals. However, proper mechanisms to do so are lacking in many organizations. While such mechanisms may be in place in Johns Hopkins Medicine organization, the key variables that measure the effectiveness are lacking. Staffing It is the role of human resources management to undertake proper staffing in an organization. This is done through recruitment and management of available skilled labor, locally and in ternationally (Pilbeam & Corbridge, 2011). Johns Hopkins Medicine is an ever advancing organization in terms of its operations and technology. As a result, the staffing of the organization needs to be diverse and dynamic over time in order to match these trends. Striking a balance between the advancement and the staffing process is

Policing themselves Essay Example for Free
Policing themselves Essay In The Handmaids Tale education is highly restricted, defined by law not to allow the reading of text, therefore diminishing the progression of society on an intellectual level. The former university which once represented freedom and learning now represents regimental order. A distinct absence of education is found as the aim is to repress through the enforcement of ignorance; as Althusser would claim this is a clear ISA, education is used to direct and manipulate the handmaids. The Bible is the only form of legal reading material and the only persons allowed to access The Bible are the commanders we can be read to from it, by him, but we cannot read: this allows them to manipulate the text to suit their needs. Give me children, or else I die. The careful selection and manipulation of material is used to try to promote procreation. The use of religious text from The Bible can be seen as the regimes way of legitimising their actions. Offred realises that the next generation of Handmaids will be more docile because they will have no memories of other possibilities. The stark contrast between Offred the librarian and Offred the Handmaid is used to emphasise how repression has been enforced through the use of literary freedom. Language too is subtly used with links to the old testament the Angels and Eyes are respectively derived from the Guardian Angels and Eyes of the Lord; this subtle insertion of biblical references helps to create the overall feeling of containment; a sharp contrast with the lack of intellectual and educational language which is deliberately removed. In both novels education is a restrictive force however, in Hard Times education takes on a different form of repression. Hard Times uses education as an enforcing presence children are brought into education from an early age, facts, facts and more facts are driven into the mindset of all, therefore firmly placing them within the machine of capitalism. Bitzer is the example of this as he becomes trapped within the system. This shows the strength of education as an ISA; by being embodied in education he knows nothing of life and how to succeed without facts, he knows of no way out of the system imposed upon him by those in power. He himself says, We are so constituted. I was brought up in this catechism when I was very young, sir, as you are aware. Here Bitzer points out that the system of education prevents any way out, distilling the human instincts of capital gain. In comparison this sense of having no way out from repression is shown by the image clusters in the language of Atwoods novel (hands/feet/faces/eyes/blood/wombs) this language works in opposition to the polluted biblical manipulation of the regime and shows the only way out for Offred is through her imagination. Imagination has been removed from Bitzer in Hard Times through education; he has been depersonalised in a way which is also very evident within Atwoods novel through RSAs. Depersonalisation is enforced by the state in The Handmaids Tale with the uniform that the Handmaids are forced to wear the uniform represses sexuality and sensuality. The skirt is ankle length, the breasts a flat yoke. The similitude of the uniform eradicates individualism to the extent that Offred begins to consider herself as we: Shes like my own reflectionfrom which I am moving away. This implication that she is losing touch with her identity by moving away highlights the success of this repressive force. The uniforms worn can be associated with uniforms of armies and law-enforcers such as the police. In this way it can be interpreted that by wearing set uniforms the handmaids are policing themselves. As Dickens uses his novel to strengthen the theory of Benthamism Atwood too uses techniques like the manipulation of uniforms to make a social statement. Living through the 1960s/70s Atwood witnessed the liberation of women in the U.S. and the wider civil rights movements around the globe such as racial equality. The uniforms are just one example of how Atwood is showing the dangers of pursuing a regime of unfair liberation. We can see the success of the uniforms as a repressive force through the change in Offreds nature when I take my clothes off. Only when the uniform is removed at night does Offred seem to escape from the regime imposed upon her; the night is mine shows how she feels about night, her only chance to feel free without a loss of identity. A similar lack of identity is shown in Hard Times through the use of colour. The colours of the town are black and red due to industrial smog. Dickens compares this assimilation of the natural colour of brick with the painted face of a savage, implying that like a savage industrialisation is cruel, barbaric and uncultured. This image of casing nature runs throughout the novel through the use of colour symbolisation. Dickens associated richness of colour with the preservation of life and individuality; neither black nor white are considered as colours therefore Coketown dismisses the idea of individuality by containing people within strict structures like the structural presence of Atwoods uniforms. Utilitarianism has robbed the town of the ability to speak; public inscriptions which are used to voice the needs of the people are black and white therefore they are devoid of any identity; they lack the capacity to provoke change. Colour is used to an extent in The Handmaids Tale to highlight repression women appear to wear set colours, the Handmaids red, the wives blue. I never looked good in redthe colour of blood, defines us. Offred highlights that they are defined and restricted by colour, they are there for a purpose; reproduction. The sarcastic tone represents an attempt to use humour to redress repression. The colour red links also to blood; several links are made to blood, most notably is the blood from the unknown people hung from the wall red is a constant reminder of where their fate could lie. Colour is used to dismiss individuality, yet it is much bolder in Atwoods novel through the images of blood. People are part of the production line, with no lawful means of expressing needs. Stephen Blackpool is used by Dickens as an example of a worker trapped within his class through the laws and structures of society: wishing for divorce he says I mun be ridden o her. As Bounderby highlights, money is the decisive factor: in this capitalist society everything is bound by wealth. There is such a lawbut its not for you at allyoud have to get an act of Parliament. For the working class there is no way of expressing their views, they do not have the power to use the system to their benefit, therefore they remain stuck within their repressed class. In my opinion Dickens highlights this so clearly as he is trying to make a political statement socialism was developing through the mid 19th Century and was popular amongst Dickens target audience, the middle class intellectuals. The novel acts as a political devise for issues of the time. Acts of individualism within this class is likewise repressed. Blackpools decision to abstain from the union leaves him a man on whom unequal laws have fallen heavy; he is compared with Judas Iscariot by his own class showing how individualism is repressed from all levels. The extremity of Blackpools act of abstention is shown by his banishment and need to change his name to acquire work. This brutal act of banishment hangs over the Handmaids too.

History of Pablo Picasso and his Art Essay -- Pablo Picasso Artists Pa
History of Pablo Picasso and his Art Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor, generally considered the greatest artist of the 20th century. He was unique as an inventor of forms, as an innovator of styles and techniques, as a master of various media, and as one of the most prolific artists in history. He created more than 20,000 works. Picasso's genius manifested itself early: at the age of 10 he made his first paintings, and at 15 he performed brilliantly on the entrance examinations to Barcelona's School of Fine Arts. Family life. Born in Mà ¡laga on October 25, 1881, Picasso was the son of Josà © Ruiz Blasco, an art teacher, and Marà a Picasso y Lopez. Until 1898 he always used his father's name, Ruiz, and his mother's maiden name, Picasso, to sign his pictures. After about 1901 he dropped "Ruiz" and used his mother's maiden name to sign his pictures. His large academic canvas Science and Charity, depicting a doctor, a nun, and a child at a sick woman's bedside, won a gold medal. Blue Period Between 1900 and 1902, Picasso made three trips to Paris, finally settling there in 1904. He found the city's bohemian street life fascinating, and his pictures of people in dance halls and cafà ©s show how he assimilated the postimpressionism of Paul Gauguin and the symbolist painters called the Nabis. The themes of Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, as well as the style of the latter, exerted the strongest influence. Picasso's Blue Room reflects the work of both these painters and, at the same time, shows his evolution toward the Blue Period, so called because various shades of blue dominated his work for the next few years. Expressing human misery, the paintings portray blind figures, beggars, alcoholics, and prostitutes, their somewhat elongated bodies reminiscent of works by the Spanish artist El Greco. Rose Period in Paris, Picasso met Fernande Shortly after settling Olivier, the first of many companions to influence the theme, style, and mood of his work. With this happy relationship, Picasso changed his palette to pinks and reds; the years 1904 and 1905 are thus called the Rose Period. Many of his subjects were drawn from the circus, which he visited several times a week; one such painting is Family of Saltimbanques. In the figure of the harlequin, Picasso represented his alter ego, a practice he repeated in later works as well. Dating... ...new liaison during the 1940s with the painter Franà §oise Gilot who bore him two children, Claude and Paloma; they appear in many works that recapitulate his earlier styles. The last of Picasso's companions to be portrayed was Jacqueline Roque, whom he met in 1953 and married in 1961. He then spent much of his time in southern France. Late Works: Recapitulation Many of Picasso's later pictures were based on works by great masters of the past?Diego Velazquez, Gustave Courbet, Eugene Delacroix, and Edouard Manet. In addition to painting, Picasso worked in various media, making hundreds of lithographs in the renowned Paris graphics workshop, Atelier Mourlot. Ceramics also engaged his interest, and in 1947, in Vallauris, he produced nearly 2000 pieces. summary Throughout Picasso's lifetime, his work was exhibited on countless occasions. Most unusual, however, was the 1971 exhibition at the Louvre, in Paris, honoring him on his 90th birthday; until then, living artists had not been shown there. In 1980 a major retrospective showing of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Picasso died in his villa Notre-Dame-de-Vie near Mougins on April 8, 1973.

Personal Goals Essay
My professional and personal goals are to expand my nursing career and obtain a position in the healthcare field where I will own and operate a long term care facility or adult daycare facility that specializes in the care of patients with behavioral issues or Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease so I can give back to my community and help those in need. I started my career in the healthcare field as a unit clerk. My primary duties were answering the telephone and call light system. After about a year, I wanted to do more so I decided to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA). My duties as a CNA entailed helping patients/residents with their activities of daily living. I quickly realized that I did not want to play that particular role in the healthcare field and that I needed to do more. I applied for the licensed practical nurse program and was accepted. After graduating and passing my state board exam, I worked as a licensed practical nurse for six and a half years before applying for t he associate degree nursing program for registered nurses. I was accepted and after completion my career as a registered nurse began. As a registered nurse my career has lead me to serve in several different positions such as: Floor nurse, Home Health nurse, Public Health nurse, Charge nurse, Assistant Director of Nursing and currently Preventive nurse. In my current role as a Preventive nurse, I am responsible for assessing patientââ¬â¢s health screenings. In evaluating patientââ¬â¢s screenings, I provide and explain information about these health screenings as well as relay my findings to the Physicians and Nurse Practitioners to help schedule these patients with necessary referrals to have the screenings. My short term professional goal is to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. I chose the University of Phoenix to achieve this goal because of the online courses and positive feedback about their programs. I currently need 47 credit hours to achieve this goal. This Bachelorââ¬â¢s degree will afford meà advanced opportunities in the nursing field. I will use this degree as a stepping stone to fulfilling my goals. After receiving my Bachelorââ¬â¢s degree, I plan to further my career in the healthcare field by obtaining a nursing home administratorââ¬â¢s license. With this license, I will begin my quest in owning and operating a long term care facility. This license will allow me to engage in a higher level of learning about long term care rules and regulations. By obtaining licensure as a nursing home administrator, I will display and build skills in the area of working with others as a team. I have intentions on relocating in the next four years to a bigger city to gain experience in a variety of areas in the healthcare field. I feel larger areas have more opportunities for a nurse to grow. For example, large cities have more hospitals, behavioral centers and nursing homes. I will use all the available resources to build my skills and create a plan for success. After gaining more knowledge and experience, I plan to return home and open a long term care facility specializing in patients with behavioral problems or Alzheimer disease. I feel my community will greatly benefit from a facility dedicated to these healthcare needs. I see patients that are mentally challenged and some who have Alzheimerââ¬â¢s that need help with their activities of daily living or just with care in general. Helping others that cannot help themselves is what I en joy doing. I understand opening a long term care facility will take a great deal of planning from obtaining licensure, to locating perfect area, and securing contractors to build. The most important healthcare resource ever to be hidden in plain view would be the caring intentions of nurses. Employing good study habits, participating in class discussions and time management such as incorporating leisure time for myself to avoid burn-out are my criteria for academic success. ââ¬Å"Using time more effectively should enable nursing students to achieve a better balance between work and personal lifeâ⬠(Mirzaei, Oskouie, & Rafli, 2012). Strong study habits are a foundation to having success in school. At the moment, my online classes only require reading. I consider that to be my study time. I realize that my classes will become more advanced and they will require a lot more of detailed reading and research. In preparation for the advancement, I plan to more carefully utilize my study time to complete my reading assignments first to focus more on the research and writing areas of my course. Class attendance is an important requirement to be exposed toà vital discussions. I plan to participate in the daily discussions and incorporate questions to the instructor and fel low students to help understand topics at hand that I need further comprehension. To stay on track with time management, I have prepared a plan to follow. This ensures that I perform all my tasks in a timely manner. It also allows me to compile short term goals each day to complete and a realistic time frame to complete and perform these tasks. To avoid burn-out, I plan to engage in time for myself by practicing relaxation techniques, exercising and walking. Also, I plan to attend various activities that my daughters participate in to integrate valuable family time into my demanding schedule. To track and monitor my progress during my course of study, I will observe my grades, monitor instructorââ¬â¢s feedback, and observe the completion of assignments and goals. The University of Phoenix allows a student to keep up with their grades by accessing their schedule and grades on their home page. I will use this and the Phoenix mobile application to keep updated on how well I am performing in my classes. Also, the University of Phoenixââ¬â¢s instructors provide f eedback after each assignment, I use this as positive feedback to correct and eliminate any future problems. According to (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2011)suggested recording your progress in a weekly journal as a means of measuring your progress toward your goals. As for myself, I have a planner that I usually write in to keep track of my assignment due dates, completion and submittal of assignment, as well as my accomplishments. Caring and compassion for others comes second nature to me. I enjoy helping and taking care of others. Accomplishing my goals will help me align myself in a better position to facilitate the necessary provision in the health management of those in need. Nursing has been a rewarding career for me and a wonderful career choice. References Carter, C., Bishop, J., & Kravits, S. (2011). Literature Review:Advertisers often choose celebrities who are physically attractive allowing them to get benefit both from the statu s and physical appeal of different celebrities (Singer 1983). Most of the advertisements which get on air contain characters that are attractive. It has been observed that consumers often form positive opinions about such characters. Apart from this, it is seen that attractive communicators are doing well in changing the beliefs of the consumers (Baker and Churchill 1977; Chaiken 1979; Debevec and Kernan 1984) and increasing the purchase intents (Friedman et aI. 976; Petroshius and Crocker 1989; Petty and Cacioppo 1980) as compared to those characters that are unattractive. In one of the study by Story and French revealed that 75% of the purchase requests take place in a supermarket environment. 6. Methodology: The data will be collected using the questionnaires. For this purpose different school, neighborhoods and shopping malls will be visited to collect the data. This research will be conducted by taking the perspective of the parentââ¬â¢s that how they their children behaves when they encounter the cartoon endorsed product. The sample size for carrying out this research consisted of 50 respondents. 6. 1 Data Collection a) Primary Data Collection In this research study the primary data will be collected through survey questionnaires. For this purpose questionnaires will be distributed to those parents whose children lies between the ages of 3 to 8 years. So it is possible to define that age group of children who are dependent on their parents for buying decisions. b) Secondary Data Collection Secondary data will help us in determining the various dimensions of the variables under study. The secondary data for this research study will be collected from different journals, books, researches and websites. Mostly the data will be collected from previously published journals and researches. 7. Conclusion Young children, in particular, have difficulty in distinguishing between advertising and reality in ads, and ads can distort their view of the world. Additiona lly children are unable to evaluate advertising claims. Children represent an important demographic to marketers because they have their own purchasing power, they influence their parents' buying decisions and they're the adult consumers of the future.Marketer tries to draw childrenââ¬â¢s attention through various means like TV, Magazines, Stickers, etc. Obviously attracted children by the marketing practices; get adversely affected most of the time. I expect this research to contribute to debates of the idea will be to find out the relationship between the cartoon endorsement and children impulse buying behavior, more specifically that whether those products are bought more impulsively by the children which have their favorite cartoon characters on them.References: Edward Martin, ââ¬Å"Cartoon characters influence kidsâ⬠[online], Health Revelations, 2009-2010 [cited July. 16, 2010], available from World Wide Web: http://healthrevelations. com/2010/07/16/cartoons-endorse-f ood/ a. Political science - Political commercial by Super PAC Essay
Political science - Political commercial by Super PAC - Essay Example Super PAC paid 21.261 Million USD against Santorum, 18.468 Million USD against Gingrich, 0.020 Million USD against Obama. The only funds used towards campaigning for Romney was only 6.791 Million USD. This goes to show that the negative campaign uses more money than the adverts that are for the preferred candidate. The chief information that the commercial is intent on passing is the principle used to create employment in America. Employment creation is crucial to the reversal of the precarious and fragile environment of the nationââ¬â¢s economy. Waste - Essay Example There are several disposal methods that are available to humans and this paper will discuss the following; ocean dumping, incineration, sanitary landfill, recycling and open dumping. These factors both have their advantages and disadvantages. Ocean dumping kills plankton and overburdens oceans, however, it is not expensive and when harmless products are disposed, they can serve as a food source. This method maybe made more effective by restricting the material disposed in oceans as some of it harms the fish or other habitants in the ocean. Sanitary landfill involves the disposal of waste materials into an open hole; this hole is closed after the waste has been disposed. This is advantageous in the sense that the land filled can be used for other community purposes. Lining these landfills with plastic, clay and sand reduces the chances of the waste being redistributed by the wind or animals. The government should implement policies that equip citizens with knowledge on methods to manage their own waste as the economy can benefit from these policies. Fuel sources are declining and the ecosystem has been recognized as a potential replacement. Hence, preserving the ecosystem can have economic benefits for the country. Recycling also reduces the costs from extracting raw materials to create a certain product. This shows that each party can benefit from waste
